Ilit Azoulay’s imagery surfaces voices that have been marginalized from the historical narrative. In Hildegard, she tells the story of Hildegard Musch, who founded Pension Patria in 1932 and continued to run the boarding house when it was repurposed as a transit station for Jews en route to the camps. The known facts about Musch are sparse and drawn mostly from administrative archives. Her character is portrayed by a Holocaust survivor, who does not share her own life story, but rather recites set lines and describes a “history-adjacent” memory. While these biographical fragments are disorienting for the viewer, they underscore the weight of responsibility inherent in storytelling.
