Roy Mordechay
Roy Mordechay (b. 1976 in Haifa) is a painter who lives and works in Düsseldorf.
Roy’s works are built layer upon layer: both in the juxtaposition and superimposition of a wide range of references, and in the creation of new works from the remnants of earlier ones. His visual sources span the digital age, cultural-historical artifacts, medieval imagery, and even prehistoric cave paintings. Everyday observations and the quiet rhythm of studio life are equally woven into his practice.
The resulting works are dense constellations of images that collide, vibrate, and echo. Figures and objects drift weightlessly across the canvas, mingling with abstracted shapes and spontaneous marks. While each element retains its autonomy, the viewer is drawn to forge connections, impose order, and search for a narrative — a pursuit destined to remain unresolved. Between concrete figuration and its dissolution, Mordechay’s motifs slip away at the moment of recognition, much like the fading fragments of a dream upon waking.
Roy Mordechay has exhibited at various institutions, including the Kunststiftung Sachsen-Anhalt, Halle; Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf; KAI10 Arthena Foundation, Düsseldorf; Kunstverein MMIII, Mönchengladbach; Tel Aviv Museum of Art; Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Nir Altman, Munich; Plus-One Gallery, Antwerp; Van der Grinten Galerie, Cologne; Maya Gallery, Tel Aviv; José Delafuente Gallery, Spain; and CCA, Tel Aviv. He has received awards and grants from institutions such as Stiftung Kunstfonds, Germany; the Pais Grant – Israel Lottery Council for Culture and Art; the Israel Young Artist Prize from the Ministry of Culture; and the Lepsien Art Foundation Grant, Düsseldorf. He has participated as a finalist in the International Art Competition for the Cologne Cathedral. Mordechay’s works are held in public and private collections, including the Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf; the Contemporary Art Collection of the Federal Republic of Germany; the Petach Tikva Museum, Israel; and the Philara Collection, Düsseldorf.
