Jonathan Ron
Jonathan Ron (b.1987) is a multidisciplinary artist, theatre creator and teacher based in Tel Aviv. He holds a B.Ed. in Theatre Directing from Kibbutzim College of Education and an MFA in Fine Arts from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design.
Ron operates in non-artistic spaces, creating, presenting, or pulling works into gallery spaces, while blurring the boundaries between high and everyday art, as well as between private and communal experiences. In his work, he connects various private moments—such as people getting haircuts, walking with their dogs in the street, having phone conversations, or doing karaoke—with the collective mood that forms the background for these actions—a pandemic, a war, etc. His recent works in video, sound, and performance explore the conditions of creating human encounters and presenting them as an artistic object, as well as the human ability to play.
Ron’s works grapple with the tension between tenderness and violence, between softness and compassion, fear and suspicion. There is a dangerous, voyeuristic, and forbidden aspect in most of the works, creating an allure that can then shatter into a smile, laughter, or pain of the performer or participant. He sees real power in gentle actions amidst a reality saturated with violence and death. Therefore, the works do not exist in a vacuum but within context, using materials from the real world.
Ron has received awards and grants from Outset Contemporary Art Fund Israel, the Israel Lottery Council for Culture and Arts and its Greenhouses program, the Rabinovich Foundation, the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality, the Independent Creators Fund, and the Fringe Department of the Ministry of Culture and Sport. He has also participated in a residency at the Israeli Center for Digital Art in Holon.
