How do material choices affect the longevity of an artwork, and what level of care should artists expect once their work leaves the studio? The talk will introduce the fundamentals of conservation from the artist’s perspective, exploring how materials age, the agents of deterioration, and the balance between intentional fragility and unintended damage.
Participants will also gain practical insight into professional standards for exhibition, storage, handling, packing and transport, learning how to identify risky practices and communicate their conservation needs to galleries and institutions.
The session will conclude with an open discussion, inviting artists to share material challenges and real-life experiences while exploring practical solutions.
